Using empty 40A breakers

I’d like to know if it’s okay to power Vue 2 from two adjacent 40A breakers. Essentially it’s a two-pole breaker that used to be the main on/off for the house, but due to a change in code, the main on/off was moved outside.

One of the posts cautions against “hooking into a breaker larger than 20 amps” but I take that to mean “tapping in” to a used breaker. Here, I’d like to know if it’s okay to use the put the red and black wires directly into an unused 40A breaker.

If you’re in a split phase, common in homes in North America, the wire harness should be:

      • black into L1
      • red into L2
      • blue and white and the neutral bus bar

The Gen 2 Vue Energy Monitor pulls only 2 watts when connected. You can terminate the wire harness into any size of breaker you have. You can use a breaker larger (or smaller) than 15A to power the Gen 2. Just make sure that 1. black is seeing L1 and red is seeing L2, 2. they’re in a split phase, and 3. blue and white are going into the neutral bus bar.

If you are going to tap into an occupied breaker larger than 15A (i.e. pigtailing), then the short black 14 gauge wire we supply in our accessories kit should not be used (it is only rated for 15A) and you will need to use the appropriate gauge wire for the tap. If the breaker is unoccupied then there is no need to use the wiretaps as you can install the wire directly into the breaker.

Remember: the wire harness is also responsible for half of the accuracy on the Gen 2, it reads voltage and powers the device, so it needs to be properly installed. Please follow the install guide and terminate the wires accordingly to the number of phases of power in your system!”
