  • I usually have 30-50W showing in balance (currently it’s 31W or 4%). I have done a bit of turning curcuits off to see where it’s going but have not been able to find it. I have three circuits not monitored (smoke alarms, house alarm, and immersion heater (which is turned off)).

I need to calculate whether adding a batery to my solar system will save me money, and if so how much. To do this I need to know how much “spare” energy is generated by the solar PV that we are not using (that could be used to charge the battery) and how much we draw from the grid (which could potentially be supplied by the battery). If the Vue could give me Watt-hours, then I would not need second by second data, but as far as I know it does not, so I think I need the second by second data to calculate the surplus watt-hours.

How best do I do this?

If it is true that Emporia only stores the second by second data for a few hours, then I can potentially download the data every hour and thus build up the history that I need, but if possible I would like to use historical data, rather than have to wait for a wole year to build up new data.

What I need to do is to calculate whether adding battery storage to my PV system will over time save me money. To do this I seem to need to know:

    1. How much energy am I sending back to the grid when the PV is generating more that I am using. I need this every short period (a few minutes?) for an extended period, long enough to be representative.
    2. How much energy am I using when the PV is no0t generating enough? How much of this is during peak times, and how much off peak? I need this too over an extended period of time.
    3. If I know the capacity, the peak output current, the efficiency etc. of the battery system, and the price of electricity during peak and off peak times, then I think I could calculate how much the battery system would save me, and thence the payback period.

I have an Emporia Vue monitoring the output of my PV system, the total energy draw from or fed back to the grid, as well as a number of individual circuits in my home. What is the best way of getting the data that I need and doing this calculation? Can I use helgew’s emporia-downloader? Or is there a better way?

    Thank you – Rowan

Yes, I was trying to post a picture. It showed fine in the draft message, but when I submitted it, it disappeared. It was a link to an image on the internet:

How do I include an image in a message? (This time I just pasted the link into the message)

    Thanks – Rowan
