I recently bought two 4-packs of smart plugs, primarily for monitoring specific device power consumption more than switching.

One of my devices is a smart UPS, and it complained about incorrect wiring after being connected to the smart plug. I’ve tested the smart plug using 2 different hardware store testers, and found that a plug with natural gravity on it seems to have open ground. Notably if you physically support the plug from underneath, you can complete the ground.

The behavior is consistent with all 8 smart plugs, in 6 different locations around my house. The testers (2, plus the UPS) show normal wiring when plugged into the receptacles directly.

Open grounds aren’t a safe solution for me or my electronic equipment, so I removed all of them from service tonight. I’ve opened an issue with support, but as I saw other people experiencing issues with smart plugs, I thought I should let folks know what they might want to check.
