Hi. I’m Hans
I have a 10kW grid-tied solar system in the house. As a software virtualization and database consultant, I’ve had an unusually large number of computers in the home office, so monitoring power usage has been very important to me.
I’ve been using the Emporia Smart Plugs as replacement for several nearly inaccessible Kill-A-watt meters. I’m hoping the app will soon allow me to set up notifications to warn when power is off, as I have several appliances that should never turn off – aquarium, fridge, freezer, hydroponics pumps & timed lights, NASes, firewalls, DNS servers are examples.
I’d really love to see a meter-only variant to the smart switch – I could justify several of those, in addition to the smart switches. Priced close to the smart switch, you would decimate the Kill-A-Watt market.
The experience with smart switches and the app have bumped me into getting the Vue Gen 2 which will be installed in a few days to replace my Neurio – which never quite lived up to it’s promise of AI’ing its way to recognizing appliances – instead of an eGauge.
Looking forward to using the Vue Gen 2 and seeing what changes the app will bering with custom notifications. My electrical contractor is also watching closely, as he has a number of solar customers who’ve been asking for something like the Vue.
I’m hoping there is a beta program for the app that I can jump on.
HansFMemberInteresting.
Many thanks for the detailed response.

HansFMemberalso interested.
HansFMemberI also support direct Homekit integration.
HansFMemberI completely agree that there is a use case for an ‘always-on monitor-only’ situation. A prefect example is monitoring fridge and freezer (and similar) appliances where the important thing is to get timely notification that it is off. I can see home and institutional medical uses falling under this umbrella as well.
As noted, this could be an app-based implementation. It could also be a new device, basically a smart plug without the on-off capability.

HansFMemberHi. I’m Hans, from Alberta Canada. I just bought the Vue Gen 2 to replace a Neurio that just hasn’t been satisfactory – just waiting for the electrician. I also picked up some Smart Switches which I’ve used for a few days and am very happy with.
