April 21, 2021 at 5:42 pm in reply to: Emporia limiting minute data to 3 day starting march 1st #7327 Report AbuseEmporia SupportEmporia Staff
Hey everybody,
Sorry about the suddenness related to the decision to restrict Second-based reporting. As others in the thread have suggested, this decision was made directly because of the server costs/resources incurred because of storing this level of data. I will point out from a personal point of view, after seeing the before/after affect of this change, it was absolutely necessary, even if for the short term. We are a small team, so it can be difficult to invent the “perfect” solution to problems as they arise, but we’re doing our best.
Regarding local storage of data (and exporting that to SD/webservers/etc…), this feature isn’t really on any roadmap to speak of as we are exclusively focused on the cloud solution for the time being. If people are in need for local energy monitoring solutions, we usually recommend the following links:
- https://unop.uk/raspberry-pi-electricity-monitor/
As far as API access and/or a premium plan goes, the plan is still for that functionality to be available this Summer. We will post updates as soon as more information becomes available.
Thanks,
Emporia Support Team
Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHey @jbyrkit,
It is unfortunate that this issue is taking longer than we’d like. The problem is that measuring Amps within the system is more difficult than originally predicted and its not “just” a software bug/issue, but will eventually be a multi-faceted fix (including app updates, firmware and customer input i.e. additional data tagging for individual circuits). We’re exploring different solutions to this issue but we can’t provide any information or timeline about when a potential fix might be provided. As soon as we have additional information we’ll be sure to pass it along to the community. Thanks,
Emporia Support Team
Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @zerog2k,
Sorry for the delayed response. We agree with the points you’ve provided above. We’ll be having discussions around this concept within the company and I hope to have updates to share soon (although I don’t want to commit to a specific timeline). If you have a particular concern, please feel free to reach out directly to the Support team and we can discuss any issues you have outside of the public forum. Thanks!

Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @duanethorpe,
First off, would just like to say thanks for taking the time to talk to support and working through your specific requirements. When building these kind of products within organizations, there are a lot of stakeholders with different opinions so I appreciate your understanding when it comes to the difference between an “ideal” device and what we’re able to build/provide.
As a separate point, I love the Github repo you’ve posted and I’ll be taking some time to digest it. Very cool.
For the other participants in this thread, we are working on making this forum more accessible and a better conduit for ideas both between Emporia and customers (or potential customers) as well as enthusiasts in general. I don’t have any additional details to provide at the moment, but I’m hoping that the forum can be a fun place to discuss energy monitoring in a variety of forms.
For those who may be looking for local monitoring solutions, here are some links we usually recommend if you’re needing something outside of the Vue’s functionality:
- https://unop.uk/raspberry-pi-electricity-monitor/
Thanks!

Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @mark,
Sorry for the confusion about recording data when the power is out. The team here at Emporia is constantly working on the functionality regarding various conditions of downtime; including power outages, wifi outages, etc…
There are different situations where this problem can occur, and they usually revolve around the time difference between when the Vue receives power again (and begins recording) but the WiFi has yet to connect in order to send that data to the cloud. In these situations its possible that the data was averaged across the difference in timing between power and internet outage/service resumption. I’ll relay your details to the team at Emporia as a potential use case for this situation. If there is anything else we can help with, feel free to reach out. Thanks,
Emporia Support Team
Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @dunkirk,
Hopefully the Gen2 you’ve upgraded to is treating you well. We don’t have any timeline on a Gen3 at the moment, so there shouldn’t be any worries about being “out of date” anytime soon. Enjoy and let us know if there’s anything we can help with!
And as far as warehouses on mars before Gen3… @waterboyz, not sure that’ll happen (given that reaching orbit might be an important step for them before traversing to another planet), but who knows?!

Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @rjjones4314,
Sorry for the delay in response. The primary way for this functionality to work is to “nest” the Smart Plug device under the monitored circuit within the application. This way, the application will understand the relationship between the CT and the Smart Plug (whereas currently there is no determined relationship and the app will treat both as independent energy monitors instead of being related on the same circuit).
To nest the Smart Plug under a circuit within the app:
- Select the Settings Menu icon (three horizontal bars/”hamburger”) located on the upper left corner of the app.
- Go to “Manage Devices”
- Select the Smart Plug device you’d like to “nest”
- Tap “Smart Plug info”
- This view will provide the opportunity to change details about the Smart Plug (“name” etc…) as well as an option called “Nest Under”
- Choose the appropriate circuit and “Save”
Hopefully this can help manage your data interaction better between the devices. Let us know if you have any other questions!
Thanks,
Emporia Support Team
April 21, 2021 at 3:06 pm in reply to: Anything in App Different Between Vue Gen 1 and Gen 2? #7315 Report AbuseEmporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @mikezinsat,
Sorry for the delayed response. The only difference within the app (regarding Gen2 vs Gen1) will be the accuracy of reporting and some of the other upgrades (additional ports for CT’s, etc…). So the app has the same functionality between the two versions (including views and actions), but overall your reporting will be better with a Gen2.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to the Emporia Support team.
Thanks!

PS: Here is a list of some of the key differences (from the hardware perspective) between Gen1 and Gen2
- Gen 2 is accurate within 2%. Gen 1 is accurate within 10%.
- Gen 2 measures current, voltage, and phase. Gen 1 only measures current.
- Gen 2 measures real power. Gen 1 measures apparent power, which can be exaggerated when monitoring things with a power factor below 1, like mini-splits, solar inverters, CFL light bulbs, and other inductive appliances.
- Gen 2 can resolve solar generation in real time. Gen 1 is delayed up to 15 seconds.
- Gen 2 implements a noise floor of 5W on its 200A and 50A CTs. Gen 1 implements a noise floor of 95W on its 200A CTs and 35W on its 50A CTs.
- Gen 2 can monitor up to 16 individual circuits. Gen 1 can monitor up to 8 with the addition of an expansion module.
April 20, 2021 at 10:58 pm in reply to: Power cycle on schedule and more than daily frequency #7313 Report AbuseEmporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @jj613,
Both are great suggestions. We’ve added them both to our feature requests and will be discussing with the team shortly.
Thanks!

Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @currentdraw,
I’m glad you were able to figure out the issue was related to Wifi signal strength. It can be hard to pinpoint at times if that is the problem. If you have any other questions or comments, we’d love to hear them. Thanks,
Emporia Support Team
Emporia SupportEmporia StaffHi @rjh323,
We don’t have any plans as of the moment to release any monitoring products specifically for that higher voltage range.
Thank you for your interest and hopefully our product line can help in other situations,

April 20, 2021 at 10:31 pm in reply to: Great Product! My Wishlist on Software Features #7309 Report AbuseEmporia SupportEmporia StaffHi Randy! Thanks for the feedback and I’m glad it can help in your situation. Regarding some of your requests/ideas, we are in various stages of implementation for many of them:
- You are correct about the display of “calendar” day/hour being potentially misleading. We’ll pass this information onto the development team as they work on features related to the home screen (more updates are planned for that page in the future).
- As far as changing the email address for the account, we can make that happen:
- First, create a new Emporia account with the new email address you’d like to use.
- Then, reach out to the Support Team here at Emporia (via email or chat using the email address that is currently registered with the account) with the new address you’d like to change to and we can update it from our end. This is a feature that is on the roadmap for the future.
- The nested (or “sub”) circuits/sensors is a feature that is currently in development (Beta testing) and should be released later in this quarter.
Again, thank you so much for the feedback and if you have any additional comments or questions, feel free to reach out.
Thanks,
Emporia Support Team
Emporia SupportEmporia StaffGreat recommendation Antonio! I agree this would help the user identify the days, I have passed this along to the app development team for review.

April 17, 2021 at 2:12 pm in reply to: Can I use extra CT 50 to monitor generator backfed breaker? #7294 Report AbuseEmporia SupportEmporia StaffHello @hoof The 50 amp sensors are directional, however currently the Emporia Gen 2 firmware does not support that functionality at this time. As mentioned we compensate for this in the app by having a flag of solar/generation, which shows all energy flow, regardless of direction as production. We do plan on updating the firmware in the future to allow the 50 amp sensor to recognize energy flow in both directions. There is no need for a multiplier of negative -1. The circuit type determines how the numbers are displayed in the app.
Also during power outages where the ISP is lost, some customers use a mobile hotspot if available if their ISP is down.
To change/reconnect the Vue:
Tap the settings menu (three lines just below the Emporia logo), tap Manage Devices, Select Your Device, tap the Reset WiFi/Solar Setup , choose the Emporia product you would like to reset, follow the prompts to reconnect to your WiFi or Solar Set up.
